Conference 2017 Round Up

Over 300 of our partners and broker members recently gathered in Whittlebury Hall for our annual conference, our biggest and best event yet. The theme was Managing Change and we had an action packed agenda with excellent presentations from leading business figures from within our industry and beyond, some very productive business networking and a great evening’s entertainment. For those of you that didn’t attend here is a round-up of the highlights.

Baroness Karren Brady’s Keynote speech:

Baroness Brady is one of the business worlds’ most sought-after speakers on subjects ranging from leadership to teamwork, and after hearing her speak at conference we can see why. Karren has achieved success born of passion, vision and ambition, but realised through determination and hard work. She has been breaking new ground as a businesswoman for more than two decades and shared with us some of her stories and insights in her trademark straight-talking style. It was fascinating to hear about her rise through the footballing ranks and the challenges that she faced along the way, we couldn’t fail to be inspired by her frank assessment of situations and how she handled them, with varying outcomes. The stories from the world of football were very amusing but also had some valuable lessons for us to draw upon as we face our own business challenges. Karren finished her presentation with questions from the floor and then she and John Lincoln formed a claret and blue alliance to present our Compass Network awards.

Other Speakers:

It is always fascinating to get a perspective on what is happening in the world of insurance from key figures within our industry, we were joined this year at conference by Phil Bayles, Chief Distribution Officer from Aviva and Steve White, Chief Executive of BIBA.  Phil appraised 2016 from an insurance viewpoint and highlighted the challenges faced by our industry over the year. 2016 was a quiet year for catastrophe losses and he feels that while 2017 won’t be without its’ challenges it is a positive time for independent brokers with the market potentially starting to harden. Steve White reported on the vital campaigning that BIBA has been doing on behalf of members and the legislative changes that have been brought about. He included a q&a session and faced some challenging questions from our members.

We had a real treat on Thursday afternoon when Lucy Hodgson – Director of Eastwood & Partners gave us a very engaging insight into her business challenges and her insurance career, which incidentally started when she was eight! Lucy also talked about the very real benefit Eastwood have felt since joining Compass Network.
